Ext. Riverside-Early Morning
Lydia the Llama enters stage left, moving towards Dave the Bat, who is scrunched up in a strange manner.
Narrator
Our fair story begins on a fine summer’s day, while Lydia the Llama rushes at bay. She’s on a quest, I daresay, on this fine summer’s day. Let us hope her victims may hold her at bay.
Lydia
Is your mama a llama?
Narrator
“… Lydia asked her friend Dave.”
Dave
No, she is not.
Narrator
“… is the answer Dave gave.”
Dave
She hangs by her feet, and she lives in a cave. I do not believe that’s how llamas behave.
Lydia
Oh, you are right about that. I think your mama sounds more like a-
Lydia & Dave
BAT!
Dave exits stage right, while Freddy the Swan enters stage left, dancing merrily and gracefully.
Lydia
Is your mama a llama?
Narrator
”… she asked her friend Fred.”
Freddy
No she is not.
Narrator
“… is what Freddy said.”
Freddy
She has a long neck, and while feathers and wings. I don’t think llamas have all of these things.
Lydia
Oh, you don’t need to go on. I think that your mama must be a-
Lydia & Freddy
SWAN!
Freddy exits stage right; Jane the cow enters stage left on all fours mooing like a cow. She talks very slowly and monotone.
Lydia
Is your mama a llama?
Narrator
“… she asked her friend Jane.”
Jane
No… she… is… not.
Narrator
“… Jane slowly explained.”
Jane
She… grazes… on… grass… and… she… likes… to… say… MOOO!!!!!!!!! I… don’t… think… that’s… what… llamas… would… do.
Lydia
Oh, I understand now. I think that your mama must be a-
Lydia & Jane
COW!
Jane the Cow slowly exits stage right while Clyde the Seal enters, going ARF! ARF! as she comes towards Lydia.
Lydia
Is your mama a llama?
Narrator
“… she asked her friend Clyde."
Clyde
No she is not.
Narrator
“… is how Clyde replied.”
Clyde
She’s got flippers and whiskers and eats fish all day. I do not think llamas act quite that way.
Lydia
Oh, I’m beginning to feel that your mama must surely be a-
Lydia & Clyde
SEAL!
Clyde the Seal departs stage right while Rhonda the Kangaroo, jumping up and down, ‘enters’ from stage left.
Lydia
Is your mama a llama?
Narrator
“… she asked her friend Rhonda.”
Rhonda
No she is not.
Narrator
“… is how Rhonda responded.”
Rhonda
She’s got big hind legs and a pocket for me. I don’t think a llama is what she could be.
Lydia
Oh, that is most certainly true. I think your mama is a-
Lydia & Rhonda
KANGAROO!
Rhonda departs stage right. At the same time, Llyn the llama enters stage left.
Lydia
Is your mama a llama?
Narrator
“… she asked her friend Llyn.”
Llyn
Oh, Lydia, don’t be silly.
Narrator
”… Llyn said with a grin.”
Llyn
My mama has big ears, long lashes, and fur, and you of all people should know about her. Our llamas belong in the same herd, and you know about llamas because you are one too.
Lydia
Yes, you are right.
Narrator
“…she said to her friend.”
Lydia
My mama’s a llama-
The narrator’s and Lydia’s voice blend in the final words. At ‘the end’ everyone joins in.
