CHAPTER III: The Shire
DISCUSSION: Sept. 15-18, 05
DVD TIME INDEX: 15:39-56
Synopsis:
Gandalf knocks on the door of Bag End. His reply is a nasty one, and from inside Bilbo sends the wizard away with a comment of 'I don't want anymore visitors, well-wishers, or distant relations!' Gandalf smiles, saying 'And what about very old friends?' The door opens and the two friends embrace in a long-time no see hug. Gandalf notes that Bilbo hasn't aged a day. They walk inside the halls of Bag End, to which Bilbo places Gandalf's hat and staff on the wall, and moves to make some tea. Meanwhile, Gandalf studies Thorin's map, which shows Smaug and the mountain. When Bilbo appears, Gandalf has vanished, only to reappear behind him smiling. They chat in the kitchen about several things, including Bilbo's little trick and what Frodo knows about it. Bilbo shows signs that something is affecting him deeply. He wishes to see the mountains again, and wants to leave the Shire. Gandalf sees him fiddling in his pocket. '... I doubt I will return... infact I mean not to.' he says. Later on the evening, they sit on a hill overlooking the valley below where the party will take place. They smoke pipe, a ring of smoke coming from Bilbo's pipe. In another moment, a ship of smoke comes from Gandalf's pipe and crosses through the ring, both being lost in the wind. 'Gandalf... this will be a night to remember.'

BACON’S Opinion:
Another great Shire scene.
I applaud Ian and Ian for their work in this scene. They really do seem like they've known each other for sixty years. Their friendship is fun to watch, and Gandalf is very fun as he moves through Bag End. At one point, he hits himself against the wall (it was actually an accident but they kept it in). Ian Holms is the best choice for Bilbo.
One of the greatest scenes in FOTR is the smoking scene, IMO. Like Gandalf says in the latter films, 'It's the deep breath before the plunge.'
Deep Breath=Smoking Scene
Plunge=Party
Awesome scene.
