This thread is concerned with the animals used in tolkiens writings, mainly the hobbit and lotr. I am reading lotr again and came upon this small passage and it made me wonder: " A fox passing through the wood on business of his own stopped several minutes and sniffed. ’ Hobbits!’ he thought. ’ Well what next? I have heard of strange doings in this land, but I have seldom neard of a hobbit sleeping out of doors under a tree. Three of them! Theres something mighty queer behind this’ He was quite right, but he never found out any more about it. " This quote made me think of the similarity with the ravens in the Hobbit, amongst others. These animals, including the fox above are more intelligent than what we normally think of animals to be like. He kind of makes animals special.... your thoughts please

I actually have noticed that also. It showed the symbiotic relationship between the animals and the abiotic factors of the environment.
For example, it said that the hobbit pony started to become causious around the Door to Khazad- Dum.
It shows that animals are alot smarter then we all think and that we should actually heed the animals warning.

For example, it said that the hobbit pony started to become causious around the Door to Khazad- Dum. quote] Well, it is a well- known fact that animals can sense danger long before we humans do (I suppose that's why all my cats suddenly disappear when I have to coomb their fur... ) Raditz, I don't know whether you have read the Hobbit. But the Ravens are very smart, actually, they talk and behave very human. And, in LotR (well, also the Hobbit), think about the Eagles!

( My cat runs every time I try to pick him up and play with him:D) Yeah, I agree with Minyaliel, animals have a very keen sense of instinct. Think of tornados, what do animals start to become? They run like heck! Also, I have not read the Hobbit but plan to [Oh and I am learning about life science so that is why I sounded so smart #56# ]

No problem. *off- topic alarm bells ring* Um... we should better get back to topic... You know, it also occurs when Tollers is talking about the Meáras, especially Shadowfax.
